Hélène Jousse

Career

Hélène Jousse has been a sculp­tor for nearly twenty-​five years. She trained under visual artist Alain Vuarchex and sculp­tor Brigitte Terzieff.

Major Series and Works

For many years, the human body — whose irre­ducible cen­ter of grav­ity she sought to dis­till — nour­ished her explo­ration of bal­ance and imbal­ance. She later moved beyond this sub­ject to inves­ti­gate the mys­tery of the face, reduc­ing it to its most essen­tial expres­sion, only to dis­cover that it con­tin­ues, tire­lessly, to reveal its humanity. 

Recognition

For more than twenty years, she has col­lab­o­rated with numer­ous gal­leries and cul­tural insti­tu­tions in France, as well as in Belgium (Brussels), Switzerland (Vevey), and Singapore.

Reading the Work

Hélène Jousse’s work finds its equi­lib­rium within a sculp­tural uni­verse poised between move­ment, fragility, grav­ity, and the search for inner free­dom. Her sculp­tures are dis­tin­guished by a sub­tle ten­sion between mate­r­ial, move­ment, and silence, giv­ing each piece a dis­tinc­tive expres­sive power. Appreciating her work requires close atten­tion to nuance: a com­po­si­tional detail, the dis­tance main­tained from the sub­ject, a vol­ume, a line, or the tex­ture of the mate­r­ial is often enough to reveal its depth.
