Career
Bruno Aveillan (born in Toulouse on February 24, 1968) is a French film director, photographer, and multimedia artist.
A graduate of the Toulouse School of Fine Arts, Bruno Aveillan has directed numerous advertising films for brands such as Guerlain, Cartier, Orange, Perrier, Audi, Nike, Louis Vuitton, and many others.
Visual Style
His work, and especially his personal approach to photography and light, is frequently cited as a reference by major figures in cinema.
In 2001, he directed the film launching Lanvin’s Oxygène fragrance, introducing Gisele Bündchen on screen for the first time. Many other celebrities have appeared before his lens, including Monica Bellucci, Claudia Schiffer, Natalia Vodianova, Sharon Stone, Milla Jovovich, Rachel Weisz, and others.
Major Series and Works
In 2008, Louis Vuitton commissioned him to create the first advertising film in the brand’s history, titled Where Will Life Take You. Running for 90 seconds and translated into 14 languages, the film won numerous awards, including a Gold Clio Award, a Gold Award at the London International Awards, and an Epica Award.
In 2012, Bruno Aveillan directed L’Odyssée for Cartier. With an exceptional running time of three minutes and thirty seconds, the film retraces key moments in the brand’s history through the surreal journey of a panther, Cartier’s emblematic symbol. Premiered at the MoMA in New York and the Grand Palais in Paris, the film was viewed by more than 160 million people worldwide within three months.
Recognition
In April 2019, he created Éternels for Puy du Fou: seven minutes of spectacular imagery filmed in the authentic settings of the park with more than 200 actors, 600 costumes, 30 horses, and two tons of pyrotechnics. Comparable in scale to a major cinematic production and accompanied by a captivating score, the film required more than two and a half years of preparation and was widely praised by critics.
While Bruno Aveillan is considered one of France’s leading advertising directors, he is equally recognized as a talented visual artist. He has developed a rich and syncretic body of research through experimental films and photography, in which recurring themes of memory and the human body play central roles.
Reading the Work
Bruno Aveillan’s work finds its balance in a cinematic, sensual, and highly controlled visual language where light shapes emotion. It is distinguished by a luminous signature, a rigorous approach to staging, and a natural bridge between photography, cinema, and contemporary art. Viewing his images benefits from attention to nuance: a compositional detail, a particular distance from the subject, a quality of light, or a texture often reveals their deeper meaning.
