Bastiaan Woudt

Career

Born in 1987, Bastiaan Woudt is a self-​taught Dutch pho­tog­ra­pher. He began his pro­fes­sional career in 2011 and quickly estab­lished him­self on the inter­na­tional con­tem­po­rary pho­tog­ra­phy scene. His work is now pre­sented at major art fairs and gal­leries around the world. He is also the author of sev­eral pho­tog­ra­phy books and the founder of 1605 Collective, a plat­form ded­i­cated to emerg­ing and estab­lished artists. 

Visual Style

Bastiaan Woudt’s work is char­ac­ter­ized pri­mar­ily by black-​and-​white pho­tog­ra­phy, where shapes, tex­tures, shad­ows and light come together. His visual lan­guage com­bines clas­si­cal inspi­ra­tion, notably inher­ited from pho­tog­ra­phers such as Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, with a con­tem­po­rary approach to image-​making and retouch­ing. His pho­tographs move between abstrac­tion and fig­u­ra­tion, with par­tic­u­lar atten­tion paid to detail, mate­ri­al­ity and graphic composition. 

Major Series and Works

His projects often emerge from trav­els and encoun­ters with dif­fer­ent ter­ri­to­ries and cul­tures. His major series include Karawan (Morocco, 2016), Mukono (Uganda, 2017), Peak (Nepal, 2020), Champions (Zambia, 2023) and Henro (Japan, 2026). His exper­i­men­tal project Echo From Beyond explores the pos­si­bil­i­ties aris­ing from the encounter between his pho­to­graphic archives and arti­fi­cial intelligence. 

Recognition

Woudt’s work is exhib­ited in inter­na­tional insti­tu­tions, gal­leries and art fairs, includ­ing Paris Photo, AIPAD and Photo London. His works are held in pres­ti­gious col­lec­tions such as those of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Getty in Los Angeles and Museum Kranenburgh. He has also col­lab­o­rated with major fash­ion houses such as Chanel and Dior, while his pho­tographs have been pub­lished in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel, Numéro and National Geographic. 

Reading the Work

Bastiaan Woudt’s work lies at the inter­sec­tion of doc­u­men­tary pho­tog­ra­phy, por­trai­ture and abstrac­tion. Through the restraint of black and white, he trans­forms sub­jects and land­scapes into almost sculp­tural com­po­si­tions. Light, sil­hou­ettes and con­trasts become build­ing blocks of the image. Behind this pared-​back aes­thetic lies a con­stant explo­ration of per­cep­tion, mem­ory and imag­i­na­tion. His work thus reflects a dia­logue between pho­to­graphic her­itage and con­tem­po­rary experimentation.
