Raphael Macek (b. 1981, São Paulo) is a Brazilian-born fine art photographer whose work explores the intersection of the equine form with landscape, architecture, and sculptural light. Raised on a family farm where his father, a veterinarian, bred racehorses for the São Paulo Jockey Club, Macek developed an intimate understanding of horses that predates his relationship with the camera.
His first monograph, Equine Beauty: A Study of Horses (teNeues, 2013), established his international reputation with 180 photographs that redefined equine portraiture through unprecedented studio techniques. The work was published in five languages and introduced collectors across more than 45 countries to his distinctive vision.
Macek photographs exclusively with Phase One IQ4 150MP medium format systems and produces all prints at InnFRAME, his own large-format fine art printing studio, ensuring complete control from capture to final presentation. His artistic influences span Ansel Adams’s mastery of light and landscape to J.M.W. Turner’s atmospheric painting, drawing continuously from disciplines beyond photography to enrich his evolving visual language.
